We drove from Kings Canyon to Alice Springs largely on the unsealed Earnest Giles highway. It was very heavily corrugated, and along this road we came across the Henbury Meteorite Craters.
Pieces of rock the size of a 200 litre oil drum made these huge indents in the earth as they hit the at around 40,000 Kms an hour. A well marked track from the car park leads to the rim of the craters and there is plenty of writeup about the event as we walked the two and half kilometre path around the crater. There was rough camping at the Henbury Meteorite Craters, however again the pattern of high winds and dust and flies made this a less than appetising place to stay.
From the Craters we continued on to Alice Springs arriving at lunch time. We found a nice restaurant and sat down to a surprisingly good gourmet meal using native herbs and meats it was one of the best meals I had all trip and it was inexpensive in the scheme of things.
After a false start we found a camp ground and set up camp for a couple of days. There was a free concert that evening around a couple of big camp fires with some enjoyable classic bush music which ended a great day.
