St Patrick’s Day

Today was meant to be Mt Gower day; however we woke up at 5am in the morning to the sound of heavy rain on the tin roof of our little motel room, it continued to rain until just after 9am. At the south of the island they had three inches of rain and to the north they had about an inch. Climbing Mt Gower was off for this particular Thursday.

We had been looking very much forward to climbing the 875 meter land mark that stands along side the 100 meter short

Mt Gower at 875 metres  and Mt Lidgbird with is approximately 775 meters are a major feature of the distinctive shape of Lord Howe.  A licensed guide is required to climb the mountain and the climbs need to be booked, with the rain we had missed our opportunity. We were very disappointed as it would have presented a magnificent climb and achievement.

It seemed a poor second prize to  spend the day doing the odd chore, lazing about and doing some snorkelling at Old Settlement Beach, right next to our Motel.

We did have a delightful evening as we celebrated St Patrick’s Day with the regular Monday night fish dinner washed down with green beer listening to Irish music. The evening definitely took on a distinctly emerald isle feel.
